Intermediate and Advanced Painting Students Explore the Detroit Art Scene

This past Saturday, Calvin’s intermediate and advanced painting students took on Detroit as they explored the city’s local arts scene. Visiting Professor of Art and Art History, Mandy Cano Villalobos, organized and facilitated the trip, making stops at a variety of sites, including MOCAD, Hatch Art, Popps Packing, and artist Scott Hocking‘s studio. Mandy shares about the experience here:

“After a brief stop at MOCAD, we visited Hatch Art, toured the building and saw the current group exhibition. We also spoke with Chris Schneider, Hatch’s president, and Alice Schneider, the gallery coordinator, who spoke to us about Hatch’s programming, as well as good professional practices for emerging artists. At Popp’s Packing we met with the husband – wife team Graem Whyte and Faina Lerman. Together they are expanding this nonprofit into a multiple building organization that hosts year-round artist residencies, as well as an exhibition venue. We were also able to attend the lecture of their current exhibiting artist, Matthew Bandsuch. Afterwards we met with sculptor Scott Hocking in his studio. He spoke with us about his art practice, the concepts that drive his work, his experiences exhibiting the world, and the sacrifices he has had to make in order to pursue his art career.”
